As the market share of Google continues to rise, many businesses are turning their attention towards SEO and trying to figure out whether or not they should focus their efforts on search engines like Bing and DuckDuckGo.
The obvious answer is probably to focus your time and money on the search engine which will give you the most bang for your buck. Which in this case is Google.
Although having a presence outside of google is important as well. While traffic from Bing or DuckDuckGo (and others) may not yield the same amount of visitors as Google, these are still niche search engines that should not be discounted.
Now with all that being said…
Should You Focus Your SEO Efforts on Search Engines Like Bing and DuckDuckGo?
Search engines like Bing and DuckDuckGo should probably be non-existent in your overall “main” SEO strategy.
Now this isn’t because these search engines are bad or anything of the sort. For many businesses it simply doesn’t make sense to spend the time and money trying to rank on them.
As a result, it is generally recommended that you only do 1 of 2 things:
Focus your efforts entirely on Google OR Consider Bing/DuckDuckGo as a secondary target if you have the resources available to do so.
If you had to choose between the two, you should focus on Google as it yields better results. For some companies however, this isn’t always possible and those businesses will need to turn their attention towards Bing/DuckDuckGo.
No matter what though, keep in mind that there is still a sizable market on Bing and DuckDuckGo so you shouldn’t ignore it completely.
Also keep in mind that if you do decide to take on a secondary search engine, there are many things you will need to consider before diving right in…
First and foremost is the fact that Bing has been known to vary its results based off of location. Due to this, you may want to consider targeting a secondary audience and surrounding your keywords with geo-specific modifiers.
In our case we would want to target keywords like nyc seo agency or new york city seo.
Secondly, Bing generally ranks lower than Google so you may need to look into utilizing a different keyword strategy in order to increase the amount of traffic you get from it.
Finally, you will want to utilize SEO tactics designed for engines like Bing and DuckDuckGo such as title tagging, anchor text, etc.
Bing Can’t Compete with Google’s Search Rankings
Finally, if you’re still not convinced, consider this: Google’s search results have a high level of authority and ranking in them confers a lot of trust. As Search Engine Watch points out , “Bing simply cannot match the authoritative weight that Google has amassed over the years” and their search engine is nowhere near as useful or trustworthy as Google’s.
